Amazon VR Video To Compete With Netflix VR
Amazon appears to be making its own play in the VR market with Amazon VR Video. The move was spotted by UploadVR when they noticed that a new job position had been added to, employer evaluation site, Glassdoor. The posting calls for “a talented Senior Software Development Manager to lead our Virtual Reality team.” Suggesting that there will be a few other positions to fill.
The job description goes on to outline that, “The future will not be limited to passive 2D experiences. The Virtual Reality team will explore and create the platform and interface for immersive storytelling,” that will include “an ingestion and playback platform for Virtual Reality experiences.” Meaning that we could see Amazon getting into the mix with other media streaming giants such as Netflix, who already have a version of their content streaming platform, NetflixVR, that is available to GearVR users.

The description also suggests that Amazon may be targeting more than just traditional 2d content. Which is also something that Chriss Jaffe, VP of product innovation, at Netflix, has recently hinted at when he stated that the company is “very interested in where [VR] could go in storytelling,”.
This could be a big play from Amazon, with Amazon VR, as hitting the 360 avenue before Netflix and Hulu could place them in good stead for becoming the ‘go to’ app for immersive VR video content. But, as with many things in this industry, only time will tell.
